Hi, I’m Jocelyn

I learned how to braid when I was 9 and have had my hands in hair ever since. It’s no wonder that I have spent more than half my life in the salon. My passion for hair was ignited the moment I learned how to style my own hair. The confidence I felt being able to express myself and allow the world to see my creativity was all I needed to know that hair would become the way I empowered my community.

However, as a millennial and a recovering people pleaser, pursing a passion in “hair” was not what I was “suppose” to do; so I went to college instead of cosmetology school. I fast-tracked my way through undergrad while also working in the salon part-time, and I earned my degree in Information Systems in 2009. After graduating, I didn’t last two years in corporate america. I quit my job and went after my dream.

I currently have over 20 years of experience in the beauty industry and over a decade exclusively dedicated to locs and natural hair. I love being able to wake up every day and allow my passion, personal experience, and professional expertise to afford me the opportunity to educate my community. When I am not teaching, writing or working behind the chair, I stay rooted with family & my daily yoga practice.

GUEST HOSTS

Season 3 Guest Co-Host

Hi, I’m Freda

I’m a Sagittarius. I can’t sing but I do it anyway. I’ve been working since I was 13. Im not sure if thats a fun fact or illegal. Im a Philly native and I’ve always had a knack for doing hair. However, my interest in business and finance lead to a degree in business from UMES. I then spent 8 years working in corporate America as an accountant, financial analyst and finally as an Account Executive for Radio One. It was during that time that I rediscovered my love for hair. A chance encounter at the Dreadloc Shop eventually led to a part time job as a Salon Assistant. Working at the salon proved to be far more exciting than my 9-5 so I enrolled in cosmetology school at night.

In 2008 after completing my cosmetology state boards and with very little money saved, bad credit and a desire for more, I left my “good job” and decided to become a full time hairstylist. A year later I took another leap of faith. I took a chance on myself and took over ownership of the Dreadloc Shop.

With over 15 years experience as a Natural Hair Stylist, I still find beauty, versatility and excitement in the ever evolving world of natural hair care. When I’m not in the salon you can usually find me spending time with my husband and two amazing sons.
